GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Public Citizen seeks a strategic, energetic, and experienced leader to serve as Mobilizing Manager for our Democracy Campaign. The Mobilizing Manager will work with the Democracy Campaign Co-Directors and manage a team to build mass grassroots action as well as strategic campaigns to oppose the Trump administration’s efforts to undermine our democracy and the rule of law, target vulnerable populations, undermine essential programs and attack institutions of civil society. The Mobilization Manager will develop strategies and campaigns as part of the leadership team, build out work plans for grassroots mobilization initiatives, manage the mobilizing team; improve workplace systems; recruit and train staff; and support and supervise a strong, fast-growing team. The right candidate will be a sharp strategic thinker, creative tactician, thoughtful and empowering manager, as well as a skilled campaigner.

Public Citizen’s Democracy Campaign works to protect and build a stronger democracy in the United States.  Democracy and the rule of law in the United States is under systematic attack by the Trump administration. Big money raised in secret that undermines the voice of the people in our elections, the freedom to vote is under assault, and lawlessness by the executive branch is increasing.  We are working to mobilize people en masse and on strategic campaigns to protect the foundation of our democracy.

Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than 500,000 members and supporters. We hold governments and corporations accountable with campaigns and advocacy before all branches of government on issues including money in politics, open government, financial regulation, the democracy crisis, fair trade, consumer protection, access to justice, workplace safety, drug and medical device safety, and more. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Management: Strategize with the Democracy Campaign Co-Directors and supervise 4+ new hires day to day, coordinating a fast-paced, rapidly growing, highly effective, flexible team working on grassroots mobilizing, communications, creative action and student engagement campaigns. Coordinate information flow and reviews of plans and written products. Assist with personnel matters, including hiring and training. 
  • Strategic planning and execution: Work with the Director and other managers and staff to develop strategies and plans to execute them. Take primary responsibility for overseeing the group’s overall time management, prioritization, and progress toward our goals.
  • Uplift and organize mass and targeted grassroots actions, both organically led and led by coalitions and organizational allies.
  • Provide infrastructure, organizing support and training to support action in key areas of the country to push back on authoritarianism.
  • Engage young people - with an emphasis on supporting campus organizing. 
  • Support mobilizing with a wide variety of constituents, including building bridges to those who may not have mobilized together before, which might include military families, business and faith leaders, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Seven or more years of relevant campaign, organizing, policy, or advocacy experience, and extensive management experience. Knowledge of our substantive issue areas and existing relationships with key allies, officials, and funders a plus.
  • Strong commitment to ending the democracy crisis and advancing racial and economic justice.
  • Outstanding analytical thinking, judgment, and oral and written communication skills. Excellent political judgment.
  • Independence and strong impulses toward self-starting and self-finishing.
  • Ability to lead, support, and manage staff.
  • Eagerness to learn new, complex material quickly.
  • Desire to create a more inclusive movement - approach with love and joy
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, balance multiple projects and execute plans while reacting to new developments and maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Strong editing skills a plus.
  • Collaborative spirit, high energy, and enthusiasm.
  • Willingness to work long hours as necessary - balancing our team’s strong commitment to both work life balance and grassroots mobilizing that by necessity happens nights and weekends. 
  • Data management, website and graphic design skills, grassroots training and creative action skills are a plus. 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Competitive salary and generous benefit package. Below is a list of some of our benefits (please note that some benefits have eligibility requirements).  Salary range: $101,860 to $131,761
