GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The worker health and safety advocate will play a leading role in managing Congress Watch's policy advocacy on occupational health and safety-- including in the topic areas of strengthening and enforcing workplace safety protections, whistleblower rights, heat stress impacts on worker health, appropriations implications, and other topics as necessary-- and manage related public education and outreach.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify emerging issues and advocacy needs and take the lead in developing policy proposals and drafting legislation.
- Working with the Director and Managing Director of Congress Watch, plan and execute legislative and regulatory advocacy campaigns, potentially including some chosen work with targeted state legislatures, which the advocate will identify.
- Research and write white papers, reports, fact sheets, letters, testimony, and comments on proposed rules and bills. Testify before Congress, state legislative bodies, and administrative agencies.
- Represent Public Citizen in public forums like Hill briefings, conference panels, and coalition meetings.
- Work with and organize coalition partners as well as individuals affected by policies on which Public Citizen advocates.
- Develop and maintain media relationships and respond to press inquiries. Develop and execute social media and traditional media outreach plans. Write editorial board memoranda, press releases, opinion editorials, letters to the editor, and blog posts. Manage the @SafeWorkers social media handle and post worker-safety content on the citizen.org website.
- Recruit and manage interns and volunteers as needed for campaign work.
- Other duties as deemed necessary.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Competitive salary between $85,383 and $141,633 dependent on relevant experience and qualifications, with a generous benefits package. Public Citizen staff are represented by SEIU Local 500 and our salaries are set according to our collective bargaining agreement. Public Citizen does not negotiate salaries.
